Why I’ll Never Get Tired of the He Falls First Trope

Give me a man who takes one look at the heroine and realizes his life is never going to be the same.

Seriously.

I will read it over and over again.

There are plenty of romance tropes I love, but He Falls First hits something different for me. Maybe it’s the certainty of it. Maybe it’s watching a man who was perfectly content with his life suddenly realize that this woman is the person he didn’t know he was waiting for.

Or maybe I just really love watching a big, protective man become completely gone over a woman.

Okay.

It’s probably all of the above.

It’s the Wanting for Me

One of my favorite parts of a romance is the wanting.

Not necessarily sexual attraction—although I’m certainly not complaining about that.

I mean that moment when the hero starts wanting her in his life.

He wants to see her again.

He finds excuses to be around her.

He remembers something she mentioned in passing.

He notices when she’s uncomfortable.

He wants to fix things for her—not because he thinks she can’t handle them herself, but because taking care of her makes him happy.

And somewhere along the way, you realize:

Oh.

This man is gone.

The heroine might not know it yet.

He might not even fully understand it yet.

But we know.

And I love it.

I Don’t Want Her Chasing Him

This is probably one of the biggest reasons I gravitate toward He Falls First stories.

I don’t want to spend an entire romance watching a woman convince a man that she’s worth choosing.

I want him to see her.

I want him to recognize what he has in front of him.

And then I want to watch him make sure she knows it.

That doesn’t mean my heroines don’t fall just as deeply.

They absolutely do.

But there’s something incredibly satisfying about a romance where the question isn’t whether the hero wants her.

He does.

The fun is watching everything else fall into place.

Give Me a Protective Hero Who Is Completely Smitten

This is where two of my favorite things collide.

He Falls First.

Protective heroes.

Put them together and I’m happy.

I love writing capable men—the firefighter, the contractor, the military man, the neighbor who somehow always knows when something needs fixing.

But physical strength isn’t what makes the fantasy work for me.

It’s what he does with it.

He’s not protective because he thinks the heroine is incapable.

He’s protective because she matters to him.

Her comfort matters.

Her happiness matters.

Her safety matters.

And once he’s fallen?

Good luck stopping him.

There’s Something Comforting About Knowing He’s All In

I think this might be the heart of it.

Romance is an escape for me.

Sometimes I want twists and danger and uncertainty.

But I don’t necessarily want that uncertainty to come from wondering whether the hero actually wants the heroine.

I love the security of knowing that he does.

Even when the characters still have things to work through, there’s something comforting about reading a hero whose feelings aren’t the problem.

He’s already chosen her.

Now we get to watch him love her.

That’s my kind of romance.

Of Course I Ended Up Writing It

Considering how much I love this trope as a reader, it’s probably not surprising that He Falls First appears again and again in my own books.

Sometimes my heroes fall instantly.

Sometimes it’s more of an oh no, I’m in trouble realization.

Some are quiet about it.

Some couldn’t hide it if their lives depended on it.

And some are basically planning the rest of their lives while the heroine is still wondering whether they’re flirting.

Those might be my favorites.

But underneath all the variations is something I come back to again and again:

I love writing women who are wholeheartedly wanted.

Not eventually tolerated.

Not reluctantly chosen.

Wanted.

Pursued.

Adored.

Loved exactly as they are.

And paired with a man who looks at her and thinks:

Her. That’s the woman I want.

If You Love He Falls First Too…

You’re definitely going to find it on my bookshelf.

It’s woven throughout so many of the romances I write, from quick, spicy escapes to longer small-town love stories.

So if your favorite part of a romance is the moment you realize the hero has fallen hopelessly, completely, wonderfully first…

Come meet some of mine.

And don’t worry.

They fall hard.

Xo,

E.C.

What do you think about the He Falls First trope?

I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
